Why I Gave Up Skinny Jeans

Happy Monday! Today, in true Team Skelley fashion, we are talking about another sobering and hard-hitting topic today.

Skinny jeans and their exodus from my closet.

When my sister-in-law left yesterday after a fun-filled weekend visit, she took with her my skinny jeans. I am done. For years I have poured myself into skinnies with varying success, depending on what time of the month it is, whether I had recently ingested beer of any kind or if I had indulged my long-standing love of tortilla chips. I am tired of my wardrobe depending on water weight.

True confession: I have gained a little weight. I am not going to naval gaze about it because it is boring and you don't want to read about it. As my dear friend Joyce says, "Your perception is your reality." And my reality has become coming to terms with the fact that I am 37 now. And while I am happy with that number, I have been fighting the changes in my body that come with it: the thinning hair, the thicker middle, those extra 5-8 lbs. that don't immediately come off anymore when I ramp up the exercise.

I am also coming to terms with the fact that I have never been in love with skinnies. But that was always by overshadowed by my boot addiction. I have found myself for the last year wearing my distressed boyfriend jeans whenever I can. So after cramming myself into my aqua skinnies for drinks with my neighbor last week -- and being uncomfortable all night -- I finally gave up the ghost. No more skinny jeans for me. But what now? I am thinking along the lines of these alternatives to skinny jeans:

Because I never could give up my boots, I have been pairing them with leggings and dresses. I love leggings so much and the days of boring black and brown are behind us. There are so many pattern and color options, which are both cute and comfy.

So what about you? What are your thoughts on skinny jeans?

  1. I agree once you hit your mid-30's your body definitly changes. I have been thin all my life, but recently I'm like...hello what's going on here. Never been a huge fan of skinnies, and very rarely find a pair that fits without causing discomfort or rolls of some sort. But I have had some success with finding a few straight leg jeans that work with some of my boots at Loft. I'll also roll up some of my straight leg jeans to wear with my ankle boots. Gotta love jeans shopping right!!

  2. I have always had curves and could never find a pair of skinnies that looked good on me even before I put on the weight. I still love my boots and jeans though.
