MEET KATIE

Hello!

Welcome to my little corner of the internet.  My name is Katie and I make my home in Huntsville, Alabama with my husband of 14 years, The Engineer:

 Our children:

Big Kid (Age 12):

 Little Kid (Age 8):

And our basset hound Fletcher, who was known around here as Chunk, Fat Dog, or the Furry Manatee before his diet took him down from a rotund 88 lbs. to a newly svelte 61:

I am a Tennessee native, born and bred, and proud graduate of Middle Tennessee State University (Go Big Blue!).  After obtaining my degree in Sociology and Criminal Justice Administration, I worked in various court systems in Tennessee until my oldest was born. When he was a year old, I set out on a new career path as a yoga instructor and happily taught beginner/intermediate hatha yoga with a southern drawl for six years.

In 2009, my husband accepted a new job opportunity and we moved our family of five to Huntsville, Alabama. To combat homesickness, I started this blog. Two years later, I stepped outside of my comfort zone, took my lifelong love of writing and embarked on a career as a freelance writer. After gaining my sea legs writing for different online and local media, I accepted a position in 2013 with The Redstone Rocket newspaper and website, a 64-year-old Army publication based at Redstone Arsenal. My job allows me to write a wide variety of stories on a range of fascinating topics of which I somewhat understand -- it comes in very handy having an engineer in the house. I also maintain the paper's social media.

I started Team Skelley (nee Yoga Gal) in October 2009, as a place to talk about my family, living with a bonafide rocket scientist, fashion, music, home decor, party planning, gardening, fitness and other assorted nonsense.  I use the blog to document our lives and those special moments that sometimes get lost in the hustle and bustle of raising kids.  It is my goal that when I am long gone, my children and grandchildren can read through this blog and remember the good times, laugh at the funny memories and maybe gain a different perspective on the person who regularly opened the back door and shouted, "If I can hear you inside the house, you are too loud!"

I am a lifelong Methodist and love (in no particular order) my family, all things Disney, spaghetti, basset hounds, my BFF of thirty-plus years, Olivia AKA the Bestie AKA Aunt Veve, shoes and it is my firm belief that "Africa," by the band Toto is the greatest song ever recorded.

Favorite movies include Office Space, Fletch, Ghostbusters, 13 Going on 30, Clerks, Star Trek, Star Wars, A League of their Own and My Best Friend's Wedding. My favorite television shows are 30 Rock, Happy Endings, Arrested Development, Buffy, Alias and Scrubs. You can tell that I am a child of the nineties. I am a music buff and sing alto in our church choir, in a previous life I played a mean flute and my favorite artists include: Steely Dan, Coldplay, Barenaked Ladies, Keane, Barbra Streisand, James Taylor, Billy Joel and Ben Folds. Team Skelley is a family of bookworms and my all-time favorite book is Watership Down by Richard Adams, although I can get no one else to read it. I also am a huge Harry Potter fan and a highlight of my life was meeting J.K. Rowling in 2007. My Goodreads bookshelf is full of my secret literary weakness -- angsty romance books. I am also a diehard fan of author Suanne Laqueur.

Strange factoids: I helped put myself through college catching shoplifters for a department store and I am not too shabby a tap dancer.

We talk about a wide variety of topics here at Team Skelley | The Blog.  I hope that you find something that suits your fancy.  Thank you for dropping in!

    1. Hi Angie! It is a small world! We don't get over to Athens very often but there is a restaurant on the square that I have been wanting to try -- Village Pizza?
